Lunar New Year
Year of the Snake Illustration
The Brief: Create an illustration for the Year of the Snake as part of the Memphis Grizzlies' annual Lunar New Year celebration. The goal was to develop a versatile, high-impact asset that could translate across player and fan apparel, social media, and large-scale in-arena motion graphics.
The Concept: The design focuses on a tough but not menacing snake holding a basketball, striking a balance between a sporty and a celebratory tone.
To honor the team’s Classic jersey night, I integrated the iconic Vancouver patterns and the Grizzlies' signature “MEM" pattern directly into the snake.
I collaborated closely with the franchise’s Digital Media Producer for the China market throughout the sketching and refinement process to ensure the illustration was culturally authentic and respectful.
The Result: The final illustration served as the anchor for the event’s visual identity. It was featured on player-worn warmups and fan-giveaway t-shirts. The motion team adapted the illustration for high-energy in-arena activations. The project also received overwhelming positive engagement on social media.
